Proper Hotel
Santa Monica, California
First Impressions
Our arrival at the Proper Hotel located in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, was an immediate relief of relaxation from the hustle culture of L.A. Entering an oasis of sophistication and style, the kind staff welcomed us, taking our bags and offering us personalised Proper Hotel bottled water, just what we needed on a summer day in L.A. It became obvious that luxury is not only displayed through the elegant design by Kelly Wearstler, but is represented through their core value of wellbeing, the luxury of “health is wealth”.
The interior design was nothing short of tasteful! Kelly Wearstler’s relaxed approach to luxury was present in every detail and corner of the Proper, suggesting moments of charm and exploration. Instantly transported into vacation mode, from the care and attentiveness of the staff, created an impressive first impression, preparing us to feel indulge in an experience of being pampered.
Accommodation
As one of the staff members led the way to our room handling our luggage, it came to our attention that the Proper has a unique layout of multiple buildings. We also noticed the importance of wellness portrayed throughout the hotel as we passed the terrace where the gym, yoga classes and ice bath is located, perfectly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. After passing through the terrace, we were followed by a bridge connecting us to another building where our room was located.
Arriving at our room, we were thankful for being guided to our room, as we wouldn't have found it on our own. Opening the door into our hotel room we were instantly refreshed from the chilled air conditioning and natural light shining through. The blackout blinds, bedside lightning controls and phone for room service added to the easygoing vibe. The subtle orange wallpaper and thoughtful furniture in the room added a vibrant yet effortless ambience. The storage for luggage wasn’t the most convenient for 2 travellers with large suitcases, but we appreciated the design of the hidden cupboards that also included the minibar.
Although the storage layout in the room wasn’t as generous, the design and decor by Wearstler carries the charm and luxury throughout. The bathroom however was spacious with Aesop products, and topped off with stunning sunset views.
Dining
It’s hard to find a place that embraces wellness while providing various elevated dining experiences. With this, I can write with confidence that the dining options at Proper Hotel Santa Monica, are something to be excited about! In fact, this is difficult to top, and I would say it’s among the best food, staff, design and atmosphere in Los Angeles, all conveniently within one hotel.
During our first night, we discovered the Calabra restaurant on the rooftop, which blessed us with the ultimate “welcome to L.A” experience. The staff gave us a tour of the rooftop, which has many sections offering something for everyone. The rooftop bar was full with atmosphere, bartenders crafting cocktails while engaging in lively conversations with customers. As we passed through Calabra’s indoor restaurant area, most ideal for functions and larger groups, we were impressed by its decor and design. Then, as the sun set we enjoyed afrobeats from the DJ and took in the 360-degree views from the rooftop overlooking all of L.A. Another prime spot was the poolside area, reserved only for hotel guests. While this rooftop was the ultimate L.A. experience, we were impressed that, despite the lively atmosphere, the rooms below and throughout the hotel weren’t disturbed by the noise. The Calabra menu offers a tasteful mix of Mediterranean and Californian cuisine, served in classic American generous portions, it was extremely fresh and flavorful.
Next to the lobby downstairs is Palma restaurant, an all day dining experience, doubling as a café and an intimate restaurant by night, catering to every occasion. The breakfast menu is centred around health-conscious options, offering both indulgent and nutritious dishes. At breakfast, we enjoyed the beautifully presented yogurt and granola parfait that was as light as whipped cream, served with fresh fruit and honeycomb. Every detail is thoughtfully curated, even our tea came with a complimentary palm tree-shaped ginger biscuit!
Dinner at Palma has a more moody and intimate ambiance, with the seating options of a booth, dining, or a lounge seat. Creating a relaxed, yet enlightened vibe that provides a more cozy candlelit experience, in comparison to Calabra’s rooftop atmosphere. For dinner, our top recommendations are the Yellowtail Crudo, New York Strip Steak and an absolute must try is the Country Rosemary Sourdough with Sicilian olive oil whipped butter, which melts effortlessly and unexpectedly raises the taste experience! All of the side dishes looked pleasing, and we chose to pair our meal with a side Caesar salad and green vegetables for a fulfilling and content meal.
When travelling, it’s expected to explore the local cafe’s, bars and restaurants outside of your hotel. However, when visiting Santa Monica and its popular hospitality spots, no other local café or restaurant could match the level of quality at the Proper Hotel in Santa Monica!
While exploring a new city’s food scene is exciting, it was a relief to enjoy our morning coffee, cold drinks and meals only steps away. Especially in L.A where driving is often necessary, having the convenience of Santa Monica’s best venues within our hotel was invaluable!
Rest and Recreation
There’s no better way to slip into holiday mode than lounging by the pool, hearing poolside tunes like 'Zou Bisou Bisou' sipping a refreshing drink under the sun to set the perfect vibe. The pool is located on the rooftop, overlooking a 360 view of L.A, perfect for both sunrises and sunsets. The pool is heated and surrounded by both shaded and open sunbeds, with mindful amenities such as Aesop SPF, beach towels and aloe vera gel. For an easy going poolside dining experience, you can enjoy Calabra’s seasonal Mediterranean menu without having to leave your sun lounger!
Though the pool was my favourite for relaxation, the Proper's fitness offerings are just as remarkable. The advanced and modern 24-hour gym provides personal training, private and group outdoor yoga classes, plus access to a sauna and cold plunge, perfect for overcoming jet lag. Another addition of the Proper’s commitment to wellness is Surya Spa, which offers a holistic range of treatments and programs, including massages, steam and oil treatments and personalised Dosha consultations. I didn’t have the chance to experience Surya Spa during my stay, it’s clear that wellbeing is admired and valued at the Proper, Santa Monica.
